The seizure of power in Damascus by the Salafi forces of al-Sharaaʿ, under Turkish patronage, in December 2024 — immediately following the declaration of the Israel-Lebanon ‘ceasefire’ agreement (and the continuation of the occupation there) — was exploited for an invasion and the entrenchment of Israeli occupation in south-western Syria, beyond the annexed territory of the Golan. The Israeli military occupied extensive areas of Quneitra Governorate and also invaded parts of Daraa Governorate and the Rif Dimashq Governorate, uprooting residents and sowing death and destruction.

Al-Sharaa’s authoritarian capitalist regime, which absorbed the forces of Hayʾat Taḥrir al-Sham (HTS) — themselves descended from al-Qaʿeda — into the state apparatus, relies strategically on support from Turkey and the Western imperialist powers. Accordingly, it has acted to restrain the local activity of forces aligned with the Iranian regime and, under pressure from Trump, despite calling for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-2024 lines, established this year a mechanism for indirect coordination aimed at de-escalation with Israel, ostensibly as a prelude to a more comprehensive agreement. Nevertheless, the Israeli government views its military entrenchment in Syria as a strategic asset, particularly for constraining the regime in Damascus. To that end, it has also fomented sectarian divisions as part of a classic ‘divide and rule’ strategy, cloaked in the false guise of protecting the Druze. Meanwhile, the population is also grappling with a severe economic crisis, which has triggered the largest wave of protests since the change of regime.

al-Sharaa at the White House, 10 November 2025 (Source: Wikimedia Commons)

As part of the Israeli regime’s campaign to reshape the region, 10 military bases have so far been established on Syrian territory, along with dozens of outposts, temporary checkpoints and inspection points. This has involved the killing, injury and abduction of residents, the destruction of homes, the confiscation of land and the expulsion of poor families. In 2025, 76 people were killed in Israeli occupation attacks in Syria, including dozens of unarmed civilians, among them women and children. At the same time, the Israeli military destroyed thousands of dunams of grazing land and agricultural fields and restricted access to farmland, water and sources of livelihood. As a result, along with direct expulsions of families from their homes at gunpoint and the seizure of houses, many residents have been displaced. These actions are intended to consolidate a long-term military occupation, aimed at controlling strategic points and ‘dictating terms’ to the regime in Damascus.

Netanyahu’s government has officially declared that it seeks to prevent al-Sharaa’s regime from exercising military control over the entire area south of Damascus — a prohibition it has enforced through aerial bombardment. The geostrategic rivalry between Israeli capitalism and its Turkish counterpart also plays a role in this context. Erdoğan provides full backing to al-Sharaa’s regime, and Syria is becoming a significant arena of confrontation between Israel and Turkey. The air strike on 18 August against the Abu al-Ẓuhur military airport in Idlib Governorate was, according to Netanyahu, a message directed against ‘Turkish military entrenchment’ in Syria. The ‘warning strike’ on the Presidential Palace compound in Damascus in May 2025, and the bombing of the Ministry of Defence in Damascus in July 2025, provided further illustrations of this policy.

The Golan Heights and the territories occupied since December 2024 in blue; areas under the control of the al-Sharaa regime in green; the autonomous area in As-Suwayda Governorate in light blue (Source: Liveuamap)

Dozens of Residents Disappeared

Testimonies from residents of villages in Quneitra Governorate recall the daily terror that the Israeli occupation imposes on the Palestinian population in the West Bank. Since then, the family has received no information about them.

The families of the abducted Syrians have organised demonstrations in Damascus and outside the UNDOF base in Quneitra, demanding information about their loved ones and calling on the authorities in Damascus to place their release at the top of the agenda in any dealings with the Israeli government.

The Destruction of Infrastructure

Satellite imagery from December 2024 and November 2025 shows a chain-like deployment of military outposts and fortified positions stretching across the rural expanse of Quneitra. The damage to the environment and to residents has been immense. Approximately 4,000 dunams of irrigated land were affected, the livelihoods of hundreds of families were destroyed, shepherds were forced to sell part of their flocks due to soaring feed prices, olive, wheat and barley crops were ruined, and women who relied on gathering wild plants from these areas for food and medicinal use lost a key source of income. Military control over additional local water sources has also resulted in drinking water shortages in several villages. The Israeli occupation of southern Syria is worsening an already existing water crisis against the backdrop of periods of drought that are becoming more frequent and more severe under the impact of the climate crisis.

Added to the military aggression of the occupation forces are clashes between central government forces and Druze militias, gang violence and sectarian violence. Residents face restrictions and attacks both from the regime in Damascus and from local militias. In particular, the al-Sharaa regime has restricted freedom of movement in the south as part of its efforts to impose its authority and, ostensibly, as part of a policy of de-escalation with Israel.

These conditions are sharpening the acute problems of an economic crisis marked by high unemployment and inflation across Syria. With roughly 90 per cent of Syria’s population living below the official poverty line, the US-Israeli assault on Iran further tightened the squeeze on ordinary people through soaring fuel prices and rising costs for other commodities. Against this backdrop, angry protests erupted this month across Syria, including in Daraa Governorate in the south, with burning tyres and road blockades forming part of a broader wave of protest internationally.

At the same time, it was reported that forces of the al-Sharaa regime fired into the air while attempting to disperse a demonstration against police brutality in the governorate. The mass anger in Syria, expressed over the past year through a series of protests and strikes, is the inevitable result of a new regime which fuels sectarian and religious divisions and, on the basis of capitalism and subordination to imperialist powers, offers the masses nothing but more poverty, repression and insecurity.

Long-Term Occupation and the Appetite of the Settler Movement

‘The IDF will remain in the security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza — without any time limit — in order to defend the border and Israeli settlements from there against jihadist forces’, Israeli war minister Katz said in June. The Trump administration’s attempt to advance a comprehensive security arrangement between the al-Sharaa regime and the Israeli regime failed, as the Netanyahu government refuses any withdrawal from the newly occupied territories. In mid-July, it was reported that Trump had called on Netanyahu to ‘begin’ withdrawing the Israeli military from southern Syria. Yet despite the rhetoric, the White House continues to provide decisive backing for the military campaign of Netanyahu’s government and, in any case, does not expect any territorial withdrawals before the Knesset elections.

Dozens of far-right activists from the ‘Pioneers of Bashan’ movement, which campaigns to expand the policy of settlement-building and annexation from the Golan into additional areas of southern Syria, infiltrated Syrian territory under the protection of the Israeli occupation time and again during the past year. They barricaded themselves inside a house in the Druze village of Hader in Quneitra Governorate and attempted to establish settler outposts at several locations. For the time being, the Israeli military has removed them, but they enjoy sympathy from the Netanyahu government and no indictments have been filed against them. According to some reports, the movement has even succeeded in purchasing land in southern Syria through Jewish businesspeople holding foreign citizenships. They represent the section of the Israeli settler right that seeks to exploit the situation to entrench the Israeli occupation through the expansion of the colonial project of ‘Judaisation’ and dispossession.

While the majority of the Israeli public supports measures falsely presented as necessary for its security, including measures to expand the occupation in southern Syria, support for the idea of establishing settlements there, or in southern Lebanon, remains very limited. The Israeli ruling class is not currently advancing such a project as an immediate objective either, because of the costs that such an adventurist undertaking would entail. The dominant tendency within the Israeli ruling class, at this stage, is not to attempt to ‘Judaise’ the newly occupied territories in Syria and Lebanon, but rather to consolidate a long-term military occupation as part of a project of restoring prestige after 7 October, with the aim of conveying the message that one does not ‘mess with’ the regional power.

Nevertheless, it is clear that the occupations in Gaza, Lebanon and Syria are providing a tailwind for the settler movement and for the ideology of ‘Greater Israel’. Centre-right figures from the ‘opposition’ to Netanyahu who support military control over ‘buffer zones’ — in practice, long-term occupation in Gaza, Syria and Lebanon — from General Eisenkot, through the Bennett-Lapid bloc, to General Golan, also bear responsibility for this development.

Resistance to Occupation and the Security Myth

At the end of March and beginning of April, demonstrations were organised in a number of localities across southern Syria against the Israeli occupation, in solidarity with the Palestinians, against the attacks on Gaza, and against the law introducing the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners. On 26 July, it was reported that occupation forces distributed leaflets threatening to harm residents who attempted to block roads and obstruct Israeli military raids. Democratic, cross-community self-defence organisation could provide at least a partial response for residents left entirely defenceless in the face of attacks by Israeli occupation forces.

The Syrian population in the Quneitra and Daraa regions will seek to resist the Israeli occupation through a variety of means. Already, alongside demonstrations and acts of self-defence against raids by Israeli occupation forces on villages, armed groups are also organising for military struggle against the invading army. Thus, the organisation ‘Islamic Resistance Front in Syria — Men of Valour’ announced that it had been established with the aim of driving occupation forces out of the region. The organisation is a right-wing force associated with the so-called ‘Axis of Resistance’, with support for the Iranian regime and for Hezbollah, allies of the fallen Assad regime. However, other political forces in Syria that oppose this axis are likewise expected to organise armed activity against the Israeli occupation.

As in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon and across the region, the state terror of the Israeli regime sows destruction, generates resistance among the population and fuels continued military confrontation. Some of the armed political tendencies that move into the resulting vacuum — tendencies of right-wing, pro-capitalist political Islam — are ideologically prepared, among other things, to organise attacks against Israeli civilians as well.

The continuing military aggression of the Israeli regime in Syria, which undermines the security of poor Syrians, is justified — both domestically and internationally — through security demagogy, as though its purpose were to guarantee the safety of Israeli residents. As Israeli war minister Katz stated in January this year:

‘The IDF controls the summit of Mount Hermon and the security zone deep inside Syrian territory, and from there protects the communities of the Golan Heights and the Galilee against threats of invasion and terrorism’.

In reality, the military aggression of the Israeli regime guarantees only a further deepening of the conflict, as part of a multi-front ‘forever war’ that has degraded living conditions throughout the region and beyond, and will continue to exact costs in every sphere, including from ordinary Israelis. Their interest, too, lies in bringing to an end the policy of ‘forever war’, the maintenance of occupations, and the subjugation of the peoples of the region.

The Lie of ‘Protecting the Druze’ in As-Suwayda

Netanyahu’s government waves the cynical claim that its military intervention in Syria is also aimed at protecting the Druze minority. In the words of war minister Katz:

‘In addition, Israel guarantees the safety and security of the Druze in Syria and will not allow any harm to come to them. A true bond of brotherhood with our Druze brothers in Israel’.

Since the change of regime in Damascus, the dominant Druze tendencies in southern Syria have viewed the new regime led by al-Sharaa with suspicion ranging to outright hostility. During the previous decade, al-Sharaa led the Salafi-jihadist Jabhat al-Nuṣra, which formed part of al-Qaʿeda and carried out brutal attacks against the Druze population during the civil war. The organisation split from al-Qaʿeda and was absorbed into HTS in 2017, whose forces subsequently became a pillar of the new state apparatus. The tensions that followed the change of regime in Damascus developed into a series of incidents that culminated in the horrific massacres carried out against the Druze of As-Suwayda in July 2025 by the al-Sharaa regime and allied militias.

The trigger for the bloodshed in As-Suwayda was a series of kidnappings and murders targeting Druze residents on a sectarian basis. These provoked retaliatory attacks by Druze gunmen against Bedouin residents in the governorate and escalated into a mass atrocity against the Druze population, led by militias drawn from various Bedouin tribes across Syria in cooperation with the armed forces of the al-Sharaa regime. The massacre included executions of men, women and children, kidnappings, rape and systematic sexual violence, the burning of dozens of villages and other grave crimes, many of which were documented and circulated publicly. According to a United Nations report, more than 1,700 people were killed and 200,000 displaced from their homes — the majority Druze, alongside some Sunni Bedouin civilians who were attacked in retaliatory operations by Druze militias.

The Israeli regime seized the opportunity and intervened militarily through air strikes against al-Sharaa’s armed convoys and against the Ministry of Defence in Damascus, while issuing hypocritical public statements threatening escalation if the regime in Damascus failed to halt the massacre. The motive was not compassion for the Druze population but an attempt to exploit its plight in order to strengthen the foothold of the Israeli occupation in southern Syria.

By the same token, the support that Netanyahu’s government provided to al-Sharaa’s Jabhat al-Nuṣra fighters during the civil war was not motivated by ‘humanitarian concerns’. It is worth recalling that in June 2015, against the backdrop of solidarity protests by Druze in Israel with Druze under attack in Syria, Druze youths attacked Israeli ambulances transporting wounded Syrians suspected of being Jabhat al-Nuṣra fighters.

Under the changed circumstances of today, Netanyahu’s government is seeking tactically to rely on cooperation with sections of the Druze tendencies in southern Syria.

Ḥikmat al-Hijri, one of the three religious leaders (شيوخ العقل) of the Druze community in As-Suwayda, who supported the Assad regime during the first decade of the civil war, turned after the July 2025 massacre towards open cooperation with the Israeli regime. He thanked Netanyahu and Israel several times for the military intervention and, as part of this alliance, promoted the idea of creating a land corridor between the occupied Golan and As-Suwayda — a route that would have to pass through Daraa Governorate, whose population is predominantly Sunni Muslim — through which people, goods, aid and military forces could move. In an interview with the Israeli news site ynet, he called for separation from Syria and the establishment of an autonomous authority for which Israel would supposedly act as guarantor.

‘We Do Not Need Anyone to Come and Trade in Our Blood’

Last year, thousands of ordinary Druze citizens within the State of Israel demonstrated out of a sense of urgency to organise humanitarian aid for As-Suwayda, and many also supported demands for Israeli government military action which they believed could halt the massacre. Yet this represents a dangerous trap. Among other things, Israeli military intervention has only strengthened sectarian reactionary forces in Syria that incite against the Druze population as a whole, accusing it of betraying the Syrian people and collaborating with the blood-soaked Israeli regime.

At a demonstration of Druze women in As-Suwayda in early May, following a number of sectarian attacks and in light of Israeli threats to intervene militarily ‘on behalf of’ the Druze, one of the protesters said:

‘We do not need anyone to come and protect us, and we do not need anyone to come and trade in our blood. She was responding to remarks by Reḍa Manṣour, Israel’s former ambassador to Brazil and an Israeli Druze, who said that the Druze population in Israel wanted the Israeli government to protect their brothers and sisters in Syria.

Hunaidi denounced the hypocrisy of the Israeli establishment and argued that Israeli military aggression, including in Gaza, only worsens the situation for the Druze as well. In her view, Israel’s intervention in Syria, supposedly in the name of the Druze, ‘only driving the rest of Syria to be hateful and to use sectarian language against the Druze. So I say: stay out of it!’

Recycling the Idea of a Druze Puppet State?

From its earliest years, the Israeli regime has sought to exploit sectarian divisions in the region for its own purposes. In the Syrian context, it continues the legacy of French imperialism’s strategy of ‘divide and rule’, which sought to fragment the masses in Syria and Lebanon, deepen sectarian divisions, and utilise the Druze population, as well as Christians and Alawites, to strengthen its grip over the region and prevent uprisings against its rule.

French imperialism divided the territory of Syria and Lebanon into six separate administrative units, one of which was the State of Jabal al-Druze (1921-1936), centred on the city of As-Suwayda. Yet this did not prevent the anti-colonial revolt of 1925 from erupting precisely in Jabal al-Druze under the leadership of Sulṭan al-Aṭrash, before spreading throughout the rest of Syria in a manner that cut across sectarian and religious communities.

In Israel, political circles had already toyed in the past with the idea of establishing a separate state in Jabal al-Druze that would serve as a puppet state of the Israeli regime and Western imperialism. Today, although Washington and the regimes of the region do not currently support the partition of Syria, strategic discussions within the Israeli establishment include proposals for intervention aimed at assisting the consolidation of Druze autonomy, and even Druze secession, as was suggested, for example, in July 2025 by the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security in a paper entitled ‘The Crisis in Syria as an Opportunity to Position Israel as a Regional Power’.

In recent weeks, Ḥikmat al-Hijri referred positively, albeit indirectly, to Zionism, claiming that ‘even in terms of doctrine we are partners with the State of Israel; historically, we as Druze were an inseparable part of the State of Israel’. Thousands of displaced people are demanding the right to return to their villages. The al-Sharaa regime claims that nothing prevents them from returning and has called on them to do so. However, the overwhelming majority of the displaced Druze population in the governorate refuse to return without protection under the rule of the very forces that massacred their community.

The economic situation in As-Suwayda is extremely severe. Rents have soared, the cost of living is crippling, and unemployment and poverty are widespread. Al-Hijri’s right-wing tendency was strengthened by the massacre, and the coalition of Druze militias associated with him — operating under the name National Guard (الحرس الوطني) — has recruited many young people into its ranks. In practice, it also functions as a local policing force that represses political opponents, disperses demonstrations, and carries out arrests and torture. The attack was aimed at overturning the appointment of a new director imposed by the al-Sharaa regime on the governorate’s education system. Residents have also protested against the rampant activities of local drug-trafficking gangs, corruption, crime and the lack of personal security.

The al-Sharaa regime has recently conducted a highly publicised campaign of trials in which some of those who took part in the massacres of July 2025 have been brought before the courts. The purpose of the campaign is to absolve the principal culprits — the leaders of the new regime in Damascus — of responsibility.

While trust in the new regime among the Druze population is virtually non-existent, the alliance between al-Hijri and the Israeli occupation, with images of Netanyahu and Israeli flags appearing at his rallies in As-Suwayda, assists supporters of al-Sharaa throughout Syria in portraying their opponents as collaborators with the Israeli occupation. It is a stark reminder of the danger that fuelling sectarian tensions could ultimately lead to a renewal of the civil war.

Cross-Community Struggle Against Oppression and Imperialism, for Reconstruction, Welfare and Fundamental Change

Socialists support the right of self-determination for the Druze, the Kurds and other minorities seeking autonomy or independence, and oppose attempts to impose ‘national unity’ by the new capitalist regime of al-Sharaa’s right-wing political Islamist forces in Damascus, as well as every form of sectarian, religious or national oppression. At the same time, they reject all forms of foreign intervention by reactionary imperialist powers in Syria, whether by Israel, the US, Turkey, Saudi Arabia or others. Against attempts to force a choice between murderous regimes of reaction, the socialist left advances a struggle for the right of the masses to determine their own future.

The Middle Eastern socialist group Iskra, some of whose organisers originate from As-Suwayda, published an article last April on the crisis in which they presented a list of demands regarding the situation in As-Suwayda Governorate and called for the independent organisation of residents against local and national forces of repression. Among their proposals was the following:

‘To work towards the establishment of an independent political organisation on a class basis, rooted in the strength of the masses and bearing a clearly class character, capable of appealing to the angry population across all Syrian governorates, identifying the real class enemy, and restoring As-Suwayda to its natural place at the heart of mass struggle. We call on all the oppressed masses in Syria to stand alongside the workers, students, fellahin and poor of As-Suwayda and strive for unity on a class basis [in struggle].’

Such demands can provide a basis for advancing a necessary, class-based, cross-community struggle against the al-Sharaa regime, against the Israeli occupation and imperialism, and for massive reconstruction throughout Syria, as part of a struggle for a socialist spring in Syria and across the region.

This struggle forms part of a broader regional campaign to uproot the underlying causes of the horrors of occupation and war. The Israeli regime is systematically working to devastate communities in Syria, Lebanon and among the Palestinians, as part of a dystopian vision of occupation and ‘Judaisation’ which, ultimately, not only cannot resolve the security fears and economic hardship facing millions of Israelis, but continues to deepen the deterioration of living conditions throughout the region.

During the 1967 war, Israeli occupation forces expelled 120,000 residents from the Syrian Golan and prevented their return. One hundred and thirty-one villages and two Syrian towns were completely destroyed. The annexation of the Golan in 1981 — which led to the general protest strike by the Druze of the Golan that lasted for almost six months in 1982 — and Trump’s recognition of the annexation in 2019 did not erase the existence of the displaced Syrians from the Golan and their descendants, who were dispossessed of their land and property, expelled from their communities, and continued to suffer from poverty, unemployment and a lack of basic services for decades. Many participated in the uprising against the Assad regime and were displaced for a second time during the civil war. The Druze population that remained in the Golan continues to face discrimination and persecution.

At the same time, the project of settlement-building and ‘Judaisation’ in the Golan has to a significant extent failed. Even after six decades, the total population of the territory remains smaller than the number of people expelled in 1967. While the ‘full-on right-wing’ government is seeking to double the Jewish population of the Golan town of Katzrin, which currently stands at around 8,000 residents, Katzrin’s annual growth rate amounts to just 0.7 per cent. Against the messianic nationalist vision of annexation, a struggle for regional peace requires democratic recognition of the right of Syrian refugees to return to the Golan, rebuild their lives in conditions of welfare and personal security, and participate in determining the future of the territory, as part of a solution that guarantees the equal integration of all the peoples of the region while protecting the rights of all national, sectarian and religious minorities.

Such a struggle also requires the expropriation of control over the region’s key resources and their transfer into public ownership and democratic administration in order to eradicate poverty and inequality. This is essential to practically pave the way towards welfare and regional peace — a horizon that could emerge through the establishment of a regional socialist confederation on a voluntary, equal and democratic basis. The current trajectory under imperialist aggression, capitalism and national and sectarian oppression points in precisely the opposite direction.

The capitalist occupation government of Netanyahu, backed by the entire Israeli establishment, saw 7 October 2023, in a cold calculation, as an opportunity to deepen processes of dispossession and annexation in the Palestinian territories occupied in 1967 and to reshape the regional balance of forces through the deployment of firepower on an unprecedented scale, alongside the seizure of extensive ‘buffer […]

[4,3
118,116,119,122,115,120,117,121,6,114
post-627","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-middle-east","category-imperialism-war","tag-judaisation","tag-al-sharaa","tag-as-suwayda","tag-colonial-settler-organisations","tag-druze","tag-expansionism","tag-golan-heights","tag-hts","tag-regional-war","tag-syria
["GET
