The strike declaration stated:

‘The decision was taken due to the army’s closure of the main roads and the continued policy of neglect and discrimination against Arab communities, which makes it difficult for us to reach our workplace with dignity. We are forced to cope with daily unjust conditions that harm our lives and livelihoods. The closure of the roads and the siege imposed on our communities, not only restrict our daily movements but also testifies to the ongoing violation of our basic rights as citizens and residents in this country. We will not remain silent while our rights to movement, to work and our right to a free life with dignity are violated.’

According to reports, participants in the strike included Jerusalem municipality employees, health workers and school students. The participation of Palestinian bus drivers in the strike even prompted Israeli authorities to announce disruptions to public transport — suggesting that the strike was not just a symbolic move.

Although Kafr ʿAqab was annexed to the Jerusalem municipal area, it is located outside the separation barrier — which also severely damages residents’ access to basic infrastructure, such as water and electricity.

In recent weeks, the Israeli military has significantly restricted movement through the Qalandiya checkpoint — through which Palestinian residents of communities in north-east Jerusalem cross the Green Line for work and study. A distance of 2 kilometres can turn into a two-hour drive. The occupation regime’s justification for this collective punishment against the residents of Kafr ʿAqab and all Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem is the release of Palestinian prisoners as part of the prisoner swap deal and the Gaza ceasefire.

Contrary to the lies of the Israeli government, the collective punishment of Palestinian communities and prisoners returning home — who were detained with military trials or without trial at all, and many of whom were actually kidnapped by the occupation forces — was not intended to provide security to the Israeli public, but rather to repress these communities and deny them any sense of achievement after their loved ones were released from the occupation’s prisons.

Demonstration against house demolition in Silwan

On the day of the strike, and as part of the Palestinian residents’ struggle, a demonstration was also organised in front of the Jerusalem municipality on the initiative of Silwan residents against the demolition of homes and the settlement project in the eastern part of the city.

The settler association ʿAteret Cohanim is promoting a plan to evict hundreds of Palestinian residents from their homes in the Baṭn al-Hawa neighbourhood of Silwan. 26 families, 154 people, are at risk of eviction. The settlers’ association Elʿad (aka ʿIr David Foundation) wants to demolish a significant part of the Al-Bustan neighbourhood in Silwan, to establish an “archaeological park”. Currently, the entire neighbourhood, which consists of about 29 families, is under threat of eviction.

One of the independent media organizations recently revealed that Bank Leumi, Migdal Insurance and Financial Holdings Ltd have donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Elʿad in recent years. This association, like other right-wing settler organisations in Jerusalem, does not use these donations to improve the welfare of any of its residents in the slightest, but only to evict poor families from their homes as part of creeping ethnic cleansing. The Jerusalem municipality, which promotes a budgetary strangulation of welfare services in a city where more than 45% of its residents live below the poverty line, has no problem cooperating with the settler wealthy right wing associations to further their goals. It was only recently announced that the municipality is promoting a plan to establish a huge settlement in the Sheikh Jarraḥ neighbourhood, right in the area where the settler associations operate.

Faced with this reality, the striking residents of Kafr ʿAqab wrote that “our strike is a clear message: we don’t want to continue living under injustice and discrimination. We call on everyone to stand with us and organize to achieve a better life for ourselves and our children.”

Labour unions in Jerusalem, including the Histadrut and Power to the Workers, which represents the city’s public transport drivers, must support the bus drivers and all workers who are on strike, and even initiate further protest actions with them for livelihood and housing solutions — against the siege imposed by the military on tens of thousands of workers and their families and against racist policies of house demolitions in east Jerusalem.

Protests in Israeli society against Netayahu’s government of death must also adopt clear demands against the occupation, settlement and ongoing expropriation of Palestinian residents of East Jerusalem, as part of a broader struggle against the agenda of the government of death, the genocidal war it threatens to renew in Gaza, the escalation of the war in the West Bank, against Finance Minister Smotrich’s economic attacks on millions of poor people and for socialist change.

On 26 January, the committee of residents of Kafr ʿAqab and Palestinian villages adjacent to East Jerusalem organised a protest strike against the setting up of new checkpoints by the Israeli military.
